Exark Relics and Tech Guide - Choosing Global Bonuses by Bottleneck
Learn how Exark Relics and Tech shape a run: compare global bonuses, academic and industrial progress, carry limits, crew synergy and blueprint timing.
How Do Relics Work in Exark?
Relics are persistent run enhancements that can change the value of many buildings at once. They are closer to an engine rule than a normal item: the strongest choice often improves an interaction that is already cycling rather than adding an isolated effect.
You can carry up to 10 Relics at once according to the current guide data. Because the space is limited, each pickup should answer one of two questions:
- Does this relic multiply what the ark is already doing?
- Does it repair the next problem the route is about to create?
If the answer is neither, keep the slot open for a more relevant draft.
Relic Roles by Bottleneck
| Current bottleneck | Relic direction | Why it helps |
|---|---|---|
| Food or slow cycles | Food, cycle speed or resource output | Keeps buildings active long enough for other effects to matter |
| Weak damage timing | Crit, multicast, trigger or cycle support | Lets a proven weapon create more value per cycle |
| Morale pressure | Armor, control or attack recovery | Buys time for the engine to respond |
| Crew shortage | Assignment, capacity or tag support | Makes existing specialists work harder |
| Full board | Global effects or slot compression | Adds value without another isolated consumer |
| Missing blueprint | Academic or industrial progress | Improves future draft quality rather than only current damage |
This is why a relic tier list should always state the House, game version, route and build context. A combat relic arriving before the ark can feed a weapon may be weaker than a plain Food relic.

Relics and Food Cycles
Food fuels building cycles, and surplus Food speeds those cycles. This makes Food-related relics deceptively powerful: they may not display a large damage number, but they give every producer, crew bonus and trigger more opportunities to activate.
Ultra C and Retromation’s runs both show the turning point. Before Food is stable, a crit or multicast relic adds complexity to a delayed engine. After Food is stable, the same kind of relic can compound rapidly because there are enough cycles for the extra events to occur.
When considering a relic, check the Food result after the relic is equipped—not only the effect on the target building. If the relic encourages another building or crew slot, include that new consumer in the calculation.
Relics and Combat Timing
Combat relics are strongest when they improve the timing between incoming damage and the ark’s response. Compare:
- weapon cycle time;
- damage and control;
- Morale gained from attacks;
- Armor and enemy pressure;
- Food needed to keep the weapon active;
- space and crew required to finish the package.
Patch 1.03 adds floating text for Morale gained from attacking military buildings, which makes the test easier. If a relic increases damage but the ark still loses Morale before the next attack, the relic has not solved the route’s real bottleneck.
Relics, Crew and Tags
Crew can create a tag, improve an assigned building or be expended for an immediate effect. A relic that looks average alone may become valuable when the current crew makes the relevant tag or trigger repeat often.
Wanderbots’ run shows how crew and building tags can guide relic and building choices. Sifd’s Guild-focused run shows how stacking a shared identity can become the central engine. The risk is taking a relic that asks for more board space after the board is already full.
Before taking a tag-sensitive relic, count:
- matching buildings already cycling;
- crew members that can add or strengthen the tag;
- free slots and Plus tiles;
- the route length available to repay the investment;
- the next failure point if the draft does not provide another matching piece.
How Does Tech Work?
Tech divides into two broad progress directions:
| Tech type | Main use | Good time to prioritize |
|---|---|---|
| Academic points | Unlock advanced buildings, crew or blueprints | The current engine is stable and a new draft can finish it |
| Industrial points | Improve production and the economy | Food and basic output are limiting expansion or purchases |
Do not treat Tech as a third disconnected economy. Academic and industrial progress are valuable because they improve future choices. If taking a Tech reward prevents the current Food or Morale engine from cycling, the future option may never arrive.
Blueprint Timing
Blueprints can be attractive because they promise a more complete engine, but a blueprint is only useful when the current run can reach and activate it. Use this checklist:
- Is the required meter already close to completion?
- Can the ark afford the buildings or crew needed after unlocking it?
- Does it use a tag that the current House and draft support?
- Is there enough open space for the final package?
- Will the next route be long enough to repay the setup?
Ultra C and Retromation’s runs show how a player can spend several cycles building toward a stronger chain. The setup is worth it when the Food engine survives the transition; otherwise, a smaller immediate upgrade is safer.
Relic Carry Limit and Replacement Decisions
With a carry limit, the decision is not “Is this relic good?” It is “Is this relic better than the weakest relic already occupying a slot?”
Replace a relic when:
- it no longer supports the current House or tag plan;
- the building it amplified was trashed or stopped cycling;
- the next route exposes a different bottleneck;
- a global effect now improves more active buildings;
- the old relic consumes strategic attention without contributing output.
Keep a relic when its global effect still supports the Food, Tech, crew or combat engine even if the original target building changed.
What Recent Videos Reveal About Relic Value
The public runs provide a useful sequence for understanding relic choices:
Early Run: Relic as Insurance
The player often takes a relic that keeps Food, Armor or cycle speed stable. It may not look exciting, but it protects the run while the House and tags are still being discovered.
Middle Run: Relic as Multiplier
Once the board has a reliable producer or weapon, crit, multicast, trigger and Guild-oriented relics become more attractive. The relic now has something active to multiply.
Late Run: Relic as Space Decision
In Sifd’s and Retromation’s late runs, the strongest problem is not always missing output; it can be board pressure and endless enemy scaling. At that point, a global effect or defensive relic may be better than another narrow multiplier that needs a new building.
Common Relic Mistakes
- Choosing by headline number: the effect may not match the active cycle.
- Ignoring Food cost: a relic can encourage expansion that stops the engine.
- Ignoring tags: a tag relic with no matching building or crew is not a synergy yet.
- Spending every slot: keep room for a route-specific answer.
- Treating a demo or old tooltip as current data: capture the version before adding exact values to a database.
- Copying a creator’s relic order: video runs have different drafts, Houses and route luck.
FAQ: Exark Relics and Tech
What is the best relic in Exark?
The best relic is the one that multiplies the active engine or repairs its next failure point. A universal ranking is less reliable than a bottleneck-based choice.
Should I choose Academic or Industrial Tech first?
Choose Industrial when basic output or purchases are limiting the current run. Choose Academic when Food is stable and a new blueprint or building can materially improve the next phase.
How many Relics can I carry?
This guide uses a carry limit of up to 10 Relics. Recheck the live tooltip and version if a future patch changes the limit.
Why did my relic synergy stop working?
Check whether the target building is still cycling, whether its tags and crew remain compatible, whether the range changed, and whether a replacement relic now solves a different bottleneck.
Verification note: This guide combines the official game and patch descriptions with paraphrased observations from public gameplay videos. Exact relic names, effects, rarity and carry rules should be confirmed from a current in-game tooltip before use in a tier list.
